HEALTH: A doctor has hit out at “unsafe” ingredients in detox teas that claim to aid weight loss

Dr Lauretta Ihonor has started a petition on Change.org to remove laxatives from popular Bootea Teatox, which claims will ‘leave you feeling energised and motivated to reach your goals’.

She says that the teatox trend is a ‘worrying one that has been raised to me by numerous girls and women desperate to lose weight’.

However, Dr Ihonor says a laxative called senna included in Teatox, doesn’t actually help drinkers lose weight and instead can cause extreme dehydration, and colon, liver and heart damage if taken for longer than two weeks.

28 days later: Bootea’s Teatox range is designed to be taken for 28 days, which Dr Ihonor says, is too long to take laxatives

Bootea’s Teatox range is designed to be taken for 28 days, which she says, is too long a period to be taking laxatives.

Writing on her petition Dr Ihonor says: ‘Senna is not a weight loss or detox substance as it has no impact on fat loss or calorie absorption in the body.

“It is a laxative designed for treating constipation by irritating the lining of the bowels. It is not safe to be taken for longer than a week without medical supervision.

Teatoxes are heavily marketed to teens on social media as a safe and natural weight loss remedy, with celebrities endorsing the tea to make it seem like laxative misuse is normal and glamorous.

‘Removing laxatives from these teatoxes will make them safer and will also prevent harm coming to any person who intentionally or accidentally takes more of the teatox than advised or even steeps the tea bags for too long.’
